Sun Ovens Intl. has a program which helps poor Haitians finance solar ovens to replace their charcoal braziers. Payment is 97 cents per week. Even with this program, over 2 billion people worldwide cook with wood and charcoal. If one were to forego the purchase of a “Smart Oven” and give that $250 to, say, one of several agencies, would one feel better about eating meals cooked on the dumb oven one already has? 2 years agoAfter reading Nutritionista’s post on roasting, it occurred to me not everyone has an adequate oven. I’ve lived in apartments where I actually used mine to store pots and pans (not shoes!) because it was completely worthless.
If you have the same issues, check out the Breville Smart Oven (on sale for $250) that will not only remedy your problem, but also takes all of the guess work out of determining cooking time and temperature. Great feature for a novice like me!
One more thing…remember the my TMI episode on Fresh Herb Baked Eggs? Lenore at the Outpost Inn uses a counter-top oven just to make the cook time quicker.
It makes a lot of sense for if you’re just cooking for a single gal or cute couple actually.
